1. Make the Lye Solution Wearing protective gloves and eyewear, carefully stir the lye (sodium hydroxide) into the distilled water until dissolved. Work in an area with good ventilation and be careful not to breathe in the fumes. The lye solution will get very hot, so set it aside to cool for about 30 or 40 minutes or until the temperature drops to around 100 to 110°F (38 to 43°C).
2. Prepare the oils gently heat the coconut oil and tallow (or lard) on low heat until melted. When the solid oils are melted, take the pan off the heat and pour into the olive oil. This helps cool down the melted oil/fat, while warming up the room temperature oil.
3. Pour the cooled lye solution into the warm oils. Using a combination of hand stirring and an immersion blender, also called a stick blender, stir the soap batter until it thickens and reaches trace. Trace is when the soap has thickened enough so when you drizzle a small amount of the batter across the surface, it will leave a fleeting, but visible imprint or “trace” before sinking back in. Trace can take anywhere from 2 to 8 minutes, depending on how warm your ingredients are and how much you use the immersion blender. Stir in the oats, honey and essential oil, if using, and mix well.
4. Pour the soap batter into your soap mold. Cover lightly with wax or freezer paper, then something light, such as a pillowcase. Peek at the soap every so often; if it starts developing a crack, uncover and move to a cooler location.

1. Gather your materials. This is a much simpler recipe than making your soap from scratch. It involves melting a pre-made soap base down and then modifying it with your own ingredients. Here's what you'll need: 1 lb Soap base of your choosing (suspension-friendly) 4 oz rolled oats (can add more or less to suit your tastes) 1.5 tsp almond oil (optional) 2 oz roasted almonds (optional) 1 to 2 tbsp honey (optional) Pot and/or heat-proof container for melting soap Large bowl or measuring cup for mixing Whisk or spoon for mixing Soap mould or pan measuring roughly 9 x 4 inches Wax paper or parchment paper (optional)
2. Choose a soap base. Craft shops have many different soap base options: goat's milk, shea butter, and olive oil are popular choices. Most importantly, choose a suspension formula to ensure that your oats won't sink to the bottom of the soap during the cooling process. Soap bases are often called “melt-and-pour” soap bases by crafters, since all you need to do is melt down the base, add your ingredients, pour it into a mould, and then let it cool. If a soap base isn't easy for you to obtain, you can also purchase a regular bar of soap and just melt it down, add the oats, and let it cool. Any soap bar will do, although one with higher-quality ingredients will make your skin feel nicer.
3. Prepare your mould. You can use whatever moulds you like for this recipe. If you're making regular bar soap, you can get away with using a 9 x 4 inch baking pan. You can really use whatever shape you want though. If you use metal or plastic containers that aren't specifically made for soap, be sure to line them with wax paper or parchment paper before pouring your soap into them. This will make it much easier for you to remove the soap once it's cooled. Some soap-makers even line their professional soap moulds. This helps prevent the soap from getting stuck in the corners of rectangular and square moulds. If you're using moulds with more detailed shapes, you won't want to line them as this will obscure the design.
4. Grind your oats. Add your oats to a coffee grinder or food processor, or crush them using a mortar and pestle or rolling pin. You want to make an even, fine powder from the oats. This is called colloidal oatmeal and is great for soothing your skin. If you're using a food processor, it will likely take between 5 and 10 minutes to get the oats down into a fine powder.

1. Set up a double boiler on the stove top with about an inch or two of water in the bottom pot. Use a large glass bowl that will just rest over the top of the pot without falling into the water. Bring the water to a low boil.
2. Divide the soap base in half. The base comes in a two pound size and for this recipe, we are only using 1 pound.
3. Add the soap base to the top of the double boiler and allow to melt slowly. To speed up the process, cut up the soap base prior to adding it to the double boiler.
4. Once soap is completely melted, add in the ground cinnamon, if using. Mix well.

Goat Milk Soap Recipe: The Recipe Also Works With Other

Just Now Diynatural.com Show details

Prepare your soap as you normally would using a cold process soap recipe. Then, at the trace , add a few teaspoons of powdered goat milk mixed with a bit of oil. …

1. On the day before you make this goat milk soap recipe, you need to freeze your goat milk. Getting it very cold isn't good enough, it needs to be frozen. I put mine in zip-top bags in the freezer and keep it there until I need it. Each bag is pre-measured at 13 ounces so it's ready to use.
2. Then, you need a large glass or stainless steel bowl. (Avoid using plastic, as it may absorb odors.) Put this in a larger bowl or the sink and fill the outside bowl about half full with cold water and ice so it's very cold. In the inside bowl, place your frozen chunks of milk.
3. Very slowly, add your lye and carefully squish it into the milk. A stainless steel potato masher works quite well for this step. Keep adding the lye until it is all incorporated. It will probably not get hot or even warm. Don't worry about that, it doesn't need to. If the ice in the outside bowl melts, keep replacing it. It needs to stay very cold. The milk may turn orange or even tan to light brown. This is normal. If it turns dark brown, you'll need to start over. The milk is scorched at this point. The sugars in the milk are very sensitive and need to be kept very cold to keep them from scorching. And if you smell an ammonia-like smell, that is normal too - just keep going. This smell will fade while it is curing.
4. When your lye/milk is ready, keep it on ice while you get the oils ready. Measure your oils using a kitchen scale. Combine oils and heat them slightly until they are about 110° - 125°F.
