1 pound fresh trimmed green beans (cut into 2-inch pieces) 1 teaspoon salt (or to taste) 2 tablespoons unsalted butter. 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour. 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. 1/2 teaspoon sweet or hot Hungarian paprika. 1/4 cup water. 1 cup sour cream. Show Full Recipe.
German green beans feature crisp-tender green beans warmed in a sweet and sour sauce with bacon, onions, cider vinegar and brown sugar. Healthy & delicious. Trim the beans. Chop the onions, and dice the bacon. Cook the green beans until tender. I steam mine in the microwave, but use your favorite method.
Start by washing the beans and placing them in a bowl. Fill the bowl with water and let the beans soak overnight. (The beans should be covered with water). Heat the oil in a saucepan and add the diced bacon. When the fat starts to melt, add in the diced onions and diced cloves of garlic.
Add the green beans to the pot, then add 2 cups of broth. The mixture of onions and beans should just be covered. Add the paprika, reduce the heat, and let everything simmer for around 30 minutes (or until the beans are tender - but not mushy). Add the sour cream, milk, and corn starch together in a bowl and whisk well.
Stir in garlic powder, dry mustard, wine vinegar, and brown sugar. Simmer for 20 minutes. In a large pot or slow cooker combine bacon and onion mixture with the kidney beans, lima beans, butter beans, and baked beans. Mix together, and simmer for 70 minutes.
