Most poke will be diced pieces of fish with seasonings such as shoyu (the Japanese term for soy sauce… no one in Hawaiʻi says “soy sauce”), limu (seaweed), Hawaiian salt, and green onion. Other kinds of poke could include tako (octopus), clams, or even tofu.

If you prefer the shoyu version, it is more or less just the first three steps of the recipe for spicy ahi poke, but I’ve also reprinted it on its own at the end. Standard shoyu poke (sesame oil, soy sauce, and green onion). If tuna is frozen, thaw by submerging in room temperature water for 30 minutes.
Ingredients. 1 2 pounds fresh tuna steaks, cubed. 2 1 cup soy sauce. 3 ¾ cup chopped green onions. 4 2 tablespoons sesame oil. 5 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds. 6 1 tablespoon crushed red pepper (Optional) 7 2 tablespoons finely chopped macadamia nuts Add all ingredients to shopping list.
Aku Poke. No Hawaian luau or party would be complete without a large bowl of poke. In Hawaiian, poke means to "slice", "cut up", or "section". It is basically a salad of chilled raw fish plus anything else you've got on hand.
